What is weight loss resistance?

Tanya Miles Naturopath perimenopause

Weight that will not shift despite eating less and moving more. Insulin, leptin, cortisol, the thyroid, sex hormones, the gut and stored toxins all decide whether the body lets go, which is why willpower is rarely the missing piece. GLP-1 medicines can help, and work best when muscle and nutrition are protected.

WHAT IT CAN LOOK LIKE

When you have done everything, and the weight stays.

Every calorie deficit costs some muscle, and the body learns that food runs out. After years of dieting the metabolism has slowed, and in perimenopause falling oestrogen, broken sleep and rising cortisol add to it. Another deficit reads as famine. The way back is to feed the body strategically, rebuild muscle and give it reasons to let go.

HOW I WORK WITH WEIGHT LOSS RESISTANCE AND GLP-1 MEDICATIONS

Read the pattern. Restore the balance.

Your symptoms are how your body asks for what it needs. I read the pattern behind them, then choose herbs and nutrients the same way: matched to that pattern, to ease the disharmony, calm the nervous system and rebuild your reserves, so your body can come back into balance and heal.

01

Why the body is holding on

Insulin, leptin, cortisol, thyroid and sex hormones read from your bloods through Endobiogeny, with the toxins stored in fat considered.

05

Nutrients the metabolism runs on

Iodine, chromium, magnesium, selenium, zinc, iron and B12, tested and replaced.

02

The road back

Eating enough, protein first, slow carbohydrates and fibre to feed the gut bacteria that steady blood sugar and appetite.

06

Alongside a GLP-1

Protein, strength, side effects and a plan for coming off, coordinated with your prescriber.

03

Muscle and movement

Strength training two to three times a week, a walk after meals and everyday movement, so the metabolism has an engine again..

04

Hormones through the transition

Perimenopause supported with herbs and nutrients, alongside body-identical hormones from your GP where chosen.

WHAT TO TEST

The results that change the plan.

Testing shows why the body is holding on, and what to protect while weight changes.

Fasting insulin, glucose and HbA1c

Insulin often rises years before glucose.

Full thyroid panel

TSH, free T4, free T3 and antibodies.

Liver function and lipids

Fatty liver travels with insulin resistance.

Iron, B12 and vitamin D

Smaller appetites leave less room for nutrients.

Sex hormones

Perimenopause and PCOS shift where fat is stored.

Body composition

Muscle as well as weight.
